Programs
Although much progress has been made in the Native American community over the past century, many families are still living below the poverty line. Despite the accomplishments in health care, the incidence of health problems such as diabetes, liver disease and tuberculosis in Native communities still far exceeds that of the general public. Many aspects of Native American life are still inadequately addressed. AAIA works with these communities in efforts that will allow them to succeed in the challenges of the 21st Century, while still recognizing and respecting their ties to their unique history and cultures.
The current mission of the AAIA, as approved by our Board of Directors, is to promote the welfare of American Indians and Alaska Natives by supporting efforts -
- to sustain and perpetuate their cultures and languages;
- to protect their sovereignty, constitutional, legal and human rights, and natural resources; and
- to improve their health, education, and economic and community development.
AAIA currently has programs in the following areas:
- Religious Freedom & Sacred Places Protection Programs
- Repatriation
- Language Preservation Program
- Indian Child Welfare
- Youth Programs/Scholarhips
- Health/Diabetes Prevention Program
- Sovereignty
