We pass the site of the "Great Smoke". In 1851 approximately 10,000 Indians met with government officials to establish a treaty whereby the government would provide the Indians with goods in return for allowing the emigrants to pass through their lands. It is said that this treaty, known as the Horse Creek Treaty, was perhaps history's most dramatic demonstration of the Plains tribes desire to live at peace. This treaty would last until 1864 when the white man's taking of Indian land and killing buffalo finally resulted in the Indians fighting back.

...the first people to travel what would become the Oregon Trail were fur traders from Astoria, OR who were blazing an overland route to St Louis, MO. Winter overtook them at this point and they camped here until the following spring. Under a hot and sunny sky we walked for several hours to the town of Torrington, WY, population 5,776. Believe it or not we passed up a Burger King, Pizza Hut, and Arbys for a local Chinese restaurant that our iPhone said was there. We found it at the far end of Main St (the third block) in a road construction area. The Canton Dragon turned out to be a very busy and popular local place to eat. We very much enjoyed their delicious lunch buffet! Ed's fortune cookie said, "Happier days are definitely ahead for you, struggle has ended."
