About the Training

University of Montana in Missoula, Montana

Brought to you through a partnership with the Association on American Indian Affairs, the University of Montana, and Your Neighborhood Museum
In-person, comprehensive NAGPRA regulations training and compliance, and collections management training for Plains Nations and institutions with collections from the Plains. 

This comprehensive, in-person training was designed for:
  • Native Nations with homelands in the Plains
    • The Plains Region includes Native Nations that identify as "Plains" from Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Wyoming.
  • Institutions with collections affiliated to the Plains Nations
  • Organizations with regional or national influence in repatriation work

Participants received hands-on training and a certificate in:
  • NAGPRA regulations and legal requirements
  • ​Collaboration and consultation
  • Compliance strategy and documentation
  • Collections management practices 

​This training was built for practitioners actively working in repatriation. Sessions included mock scenarios, collaborative problem-solving, talking circles, and focused workshops on compliance and museum management. Participants left with practical tools they could use immediately.
